An interesting portrait of a Boar Hound. This
picture is signed and dated. The name of the dog is Cesar.
This portrait retains its original frame, very high quality
with a design of oak leaves and acorns in matt and burnished
gold leaf.
Cesar must have been an important dog for the owners to have gone to the expense
of commissioning a well known portraitist such as Werner
von Kalitsh. He specialised in animal paintings, he was born in Dusseldorf
and his debut was in Berlin in 1879. Cesar was born in 1878 and the portrait
was painted in 1888.
Mrs Betty Baxter has seen this portrait
and judges Cesar to be a Germab Boar Hound. The German Mastiff derived
from this breed.
Height 99cm, Width 71cm. |
